Just Imagine 2009

The Just Imagine exhibition run by Wollongong City Art Gallery will soon be launched and I’ve been invited to be their ‘Author in Residence’ this year.
The project aims to encourage school children to write creatively about art. This year’s exhibits include paintings, photographs and ceramics.
I will be running a workshop for teachers and some writing workshops for students at the gallery during the July school holidays.
The winners of the creative writing competition will be announced in August.
Check it out if you’re in Wollongong between April and August.

Something More did make it to Bologna after all. Sandy Fussell was right. Allen & Unwin very kindly sent me the pictures and if the poster makes it back in one piece they are going to send it to me. How good is that? I’ll make some giant photocopies and every time my kid annoys me I’ll paste one over his favourite cricket poster.

Had a great day at the launch of Tracey Hawkin’s book Martha’s Journey. The book store was crowded and she was kept busy signing for hours.
The after party at her was great fun.  A link to some photos will be here soon.

On Tuesday at 12 noon the Children’s Book Council of Australia announced its Shortlist and Notable books of the year for 2009.

Massive congrats to Sandy Fussell on Polar Boy being shortlisted in the six books for the Younger Readers category. For more info about Sandy, check out her websites under LINKS.

Boofheads was named as a Notable book for 2009 in the Books For Older Readers. Not bad for a first book, especially when the shortlist included outstanding writers Melina Marchetta, Jackie French, Anthony Earl, David Cornish and James Moloney.
Shaun Tan was also on there. Is there anything that man can’t do?

Off to Melbourne in the last week of May to the Vic state Library’s Reading Matters Conference. I will be on panels with amazing and experienced authors over the three days and will also give a five minute reading from Boofheads. That’s the one I’m dreading. I hate reading my own work. Am agonising over which part to read. Email me if you have any suggestions.

  May 21 2009
On Thursday May 21st I’m off to the CBCA NSW International dinner with overseas authors, MT Anderson and Mal Peet. The latter has been a hero of mine since I taught his book Keeper to a Year Nine class a couple of years ago. Both a Walker Book authors like me so hopefully I’ll get a chance to stutter hello and gush something dumb about how much I love his work.

.Something More, along with some of the other books in A&U’s Girlfriend series will be published in Turkey. How Bazaar!

On April 2nd I had a great time working with teachers in the Illawarra at Wollongong City Art Gallery. The exhibition, Just Imagine is a series of 12 Art works on view for school groups and the general public. The gallery runs a creative writing competition — an imaginative response to one of the art works of your choice and winners will be announced at the exhibition’s closing ceremony on August 2nd 2009, which I will open.
Check out the project and all the other things Wollongong City Gallery has to offer at their web site:
